Mulch & Bed Installation in Jackson, TN
Mulch is the cheapest landscape upgrade that makes the biggest visual difference. Crisp edges, fresh dark mulch, beds cleaned of weeds and debris — same property suddenly looks $20k more cared-for. We do this annually for clients, or as a one-shot refresh.

What We Do
- Annual mulch refresh — remove the old crusty layer if needed, edge the beds clean, lay fresh mulch at 2–3 inches
- New beds — cut bed lines, install edging, kill turf inside, install plants if scope includes, mulch over
- Bed edging — spade-cut edges (the classic look), steel/aluminum edging, or stone edging for permanence
- Weed barrier — landscape fabric where appropriate (mostly for low-plant areas; we usually skip it in active planting beds)
- Bed cleanout — remove leaves, dead annuals, broken stems before spring or fall mulch
- Commercial mulch contracts — HOA entries, retail centers, office parks — usually twice a year, spring and fall
Mulch Materials — Which to Pick
- Hardwood (natural double-ground) — the standard. Dark brown, breaks down into soil, looks natural. Fades in 4–6 months.
- Dyed mulch (brown, black, red) — holds color longer (12+ months), uniform appearance. Good for commercial properties. Some homeowners prefer it for the consistent look.
- Pine straw — classic Southern look, very long-lasting, great for sloped beds because it doesn’t wash out. Slightly acidic, good for azaleas.
- Cypress / cedar — insect-repellent properties, longer-lasting than hardwood; pricier
- Rubber mulch — sometimes asked about. We don’t recommend it for landscape beds — the look is plastic and it leaches into the soil.
Bed Edging Methods
Spade-cut edges are the classic and cost nothing once cut, but need redoing each year. Steel or aluminum edging stays put for 10+ years and gives a hard line. Stone edging (boulders, cut stone) looks the most architectural and is permanent. We can advise on which fits your property and budget.
Weed Prevention
Pre-emergent herbicide in early spring (before crabgrass germinates) catches most annual weeds before they sprout — far more effective than pulling them all summer. We apply pre-emergent on request and on commercial maintenance contracts. Landscape fabric works in low-plant gravel areas but conflicts with active planting beds (perennials spread, fabric blocks them).
Timing — When to Mulch
Spring (March–April) refresh: ahead of the growing season, after spring cleanup, before the lawn is in full swing. Fall (October–November) refresh: protects roots before winter, looks crisp for the holidays. One refresh per year is enough on most properties; two for high-visibility commercial.
How We Price Professional Landscaping Mulch Work
By the yard, plus labor. We measure beds, calculate mulch volume to 3-inch depth, and quote installed price (we deliver and spread — not just dump in the driveway). Here’s how our quotes work.
