Hardscaping in Jackson, TN — Patios, Walls, Walkways & Fire Pits
Hardscape that holds up isn't about the paver — it's about the base. We excavate to depth, install proper gravel base, screed bedding sand, and lay the surface so it stays flat and drains right for decades. Cheap patio bids skip the base. We don't.

What We Build
- Paver patios — concrete pavers, clay pavers, travertine, in a range of patterns — herringbone, running bond, basketweave, random ashlar
- Flagstone & natural stone — dry-laid or mortar-set on a concrete pad, for a more organic look
- Concrete patios — broom finish, stamped, exposed aggregate; sometimes the right call vs pavers depending on style and budget
- Walkways — from front-door walks to long meandering garden paths
- Retaining walls — segmental block (Versa-Lok, Belgard, etc.), natural stone, timber for low garden walls. Engineered above 4 ft.
- Seat walls and pillars — freestanding low walls that double as bench seating around patios and fire pits
- Fire pits — built-in stone, gas-piped or wood-burning, with proper clearances
- Outdoor kitchens — grill surrounds, counters, sometimes a pizza oven for the ambitious
Base Prep — Where Cheap Patios Fail
The base is everything. We excavate 8–12 inches below finished grade, install geotextile fabric in problem soils, lay 6 inches of compacted crushed stone (compacted in 2-inch lifts — not dumped and rolled once), screed an inch of bedding sand, and lay the surface. Edge restraints anchor the perimeter. Polymeric sand locks the joints. That patio stays flat. The one your neighbor’s cousin did in a weekend won’t.
Retaining Walls That Last
The wall above the soil is the boring part. The wall behind the soil is where it lives or dies: a drainage layer (gravel + perforated drain pipe), geogrid back into the slope every couple of courses for walls over 3 ft, batter (slight lean back into the slope), and proper backfill compacted in lifts. Skip those and the wall bulges in three years and fails in five. We don’t skip them. Anything over 4 ft needs engineered design — we’ll arrange it.
Material Choices
- Concrete pavers — tough, affordable, huge color/style range, most popular in Jackson
- Travertine — cool underfoot, premium look, requires sealing
- Bluestone & flagstone — the most organic, beautiful natural surface; pricier; works well with traditional or rustic homes
- Stamped concrete — lower cost than pavers, looks great when fresh; harder to repair, can crack in clay soil
Drainage Around Hardscape
Every patio needs slope — typically 1/4 inch per foot — away from the house. Behind retaining walls, drainage prevents hydrostatic pressure (the thing that pushes walls over). Where downspouts meet hardscape, we tie them into proper outlets. The first sign of bad hardscape: standing water after a storm. We design to prevent that on day one.
How We Price Professional Landscaping Hardscape Work
By the project. Square footage for patios and walks, linear footage for walls, plus material grade, base depth, and access. We give written quotes with itemized scope. Here’s how our quotes work.
